The Volla Phone is another Linux smartphone focused on privacy

If there is something that worries certain smartphone users it is privacy, hence projects as Volla Phone arises in order to offer a more user-friendly and more transparent alternative thanks to the use of Open Source software, starting, as almost Always, with Linux.

To make the Volla Phone a reality, the project managers have decided to launch a campaign on Kickstarter whose goal is to reach a minimum of 350,000 euros, currently carrying only about 14,000 euros when the campaign only has 16 days left.

On the resulting smartphone in case the crowdfunding campaign was successful, it would work with its own operating system based on Android Open Source Project (AOSP) called Volla OS, of which the project managers are already working on a prototype. It will not include by default Google applications or services, whose privacy is highly questioned from many fronts.

But the Volla Phone does not want to be another closed device with several barriers to the replacement of the operating system, but it will also be able to support other alternative Linux such as Memo Mobile and UBPorts (successor of Ubuntu Touch). The inclusion of this characteristic by those responsible for the project would only come in case of reaching 490,000 euros of the collection in the Kickstarter campaign, so, for now, it seems rather a goal quite difficult to achieve at the moment.

With a set price of 359 euros in the Kickstarter campaign, the Volla Phone includes, at least with its own operating system, a VPN service with free and paid options. Regarding the use of the smartphone, it will include among its features a call Springboard (trampoline) that allows you to start writing on the home screen to get predictions of the actions you want to complete, such as starting to write the name of a contact and then appear the contact itself and the actions it supports, among which obviously is to call. If you enter a term, a web browser will open displaying the results obtained in an Internet search engine.

At the hardware level, it will have a 6.3-inch screen, a MediaTek Helio P23 processor, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of internal data storage, a 5,000mAh battery, a dual-camera configuration in the back with a 16 another of 2 megapixels and a front camera of 16 megapixels. In addition, it will include a fingerprint sensor, USB Type-C for data transmission and battery recharge, 3.5 mm jack for “lifelong” headphones, a microSD card reader and support to recharge the battery wirelessly

Despite pointing against a colossus like Android, the Volla Phone will compete primarily with more or less similar alternatives such as the PinePhone and the Librem 5. Those who are interested in having Volla Phone get ahead can support it by contributing money in the crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter, although it seems that they will need to add a lot of support in a very short time to achieve their goals.
